Non-Toy Christmas Gift Ideas for Children that build strong bond
Like me, you’ve donated more than half your child’s toys to your local thrift store and haven’t seen much difference. It’s not that I dislike toys. There are many I even love. Innovative toymakers have developed engaging, creative, socially responsible, and durable toys. As a child grows and develops, playtime is essential to their development.
And secondly, spending time with our precious children is a far more attractive gift than anything we can put in a gift bag. In thirty years, they will still be excited about “that moment you took me to see,” even if they do not jump up and down as they do on Christmas morning as gifts are unwrapped.
There is a list of non-toy Christmas gift ideas for your children that build a strong bond.
Tickets to an event.
Growing up, one of my favorite Christmas presents was when my papa took me to the symphony. Give your kid tickets to an event that makes them feel grown up, special, or just something to look forward to.
Magazine subscriptions.
Our first child received Babybug magazine for Christmas when she was born, which evolved into Ladybug and Spider as she grew. In addition to her enjoyment of receiving mail every month, magazines like these, with low fluff and high quality, encourage literacy skills in children.
Kid’s nourishment lectures
Encourage what your kid loves or is good at. Be it dance, carpentry art, athletics, storytelling, horseback riding, or music, give your kid a chance to enhance their skills by doing something they want or love to learn. The only caution here is to reserve the classes before you gift them.
Attending a class together can be a twist on this idea. It’s time together. It’s a great way to get attached. It can even be a great way to teach more profound life skills, like my perpetual favorite.
Memberships subscriptions
If there’s a museum, zoo, aquarium, music venue or theatre in your area, gift your kid a membership so they can attend regularly. It will provide ongoing events together, and you’ll get to explore more in-depth each time you follow. These are an especially great idea for big families. Getting a “family rate” is usually cheaper than purchasing a day membership once or twice.
Repurposed play food & kitchen items.
Place together an entire kitchen of play food and kitchen item by collecting used containers from your kitchens, such as salt & pepper shakers, spice jars, and empty boxes (such as from cornstarch, baking powder, baking soda, and sugar), then cleaning all repurposed kitchen item out carefully and well taping shut any loose or sharp edges. If your kid already has “pretty” enough as a gift, leave this gift, but if you want to “prettify” items, decorate and paint them to make them look just right.
Travel Accessories
Whether it’s a toiletry bag to keep your child’s toothbrush or a backpacking backpack on the next trip they spend the night at Grandma’s, having their travel bag or supplies for on-the-road gears children up for adventure helps assuage fears of the unknown by fostering independence. If you’ve traveled away from home, put some photos from the trip into the gift.
Monthly mail.
One of my daughter’s absolute favorite gifts of all time was when I gave her the favourite Christmas gift of sending her a MONTHLY mail subscription once a month for the following year. I choose cards with fun pictures that reflect the place where my daughter lives, and my daughter still treasures each of those postcards. Kids love getting mail, providing an excellent, ongoing connection between the giver and the receiver.
A piggy bank.
Please help your child learn budgeting and saving skills by giving them a piggy bank. It has separate compartments for spending, saving, and tithing (sharing). You can also seed the piggy bank with a cash gift if you desire!
Musical instruments
Listening to music is everyone’s favorite, but making it and creating your melodies, sounds, and rhythms is even more so. Whether small, like shaker maracas and eggs, or large, like a keyboard or guitar, the ability to recreate music informs and shapes the mind AND spirit.
Audiobooks.
A good story revitalizes the mind and inspires discovery. And sometimes, it’s just lovely to hear a story rather than read it, especially when a master storyteller reads it. Give your kid a gift they can curl up with repeatedly. Some of our family favorites include the Classical Kids series, The Christmas Miracle of Jonathan Toomey, The Children’s Homer, the Magic Tree House series, and any books from The Chronicles of Narnia.
A photo album.
Whether packed with photos or gifted with a photo album and a small camera helps create their life story. Whether the kid uses it to tell the story of an event or their life events, this can become a treasure for years.
Rules That Help You to Decide on a Great Christmas Gift for Your Child
Every Christmas, the child faces a disorganized mountain of presents from our extended family and us.
This resulted in frustrated parents, overwhelmed kids, ridiculous waste, a mess, and a huge credit card debt.
Four gift rule
Limit gift-giving to four gifts, where each facility fulfills a specific gift parameter. These parameters are
1. Something they want
2. Something they need
3. Something to wear
4. Something to read
Want: This is a “big item” – your kid loves it.
Wear: This is when we can consider each kid’s unique sense of style and any sensory issues. Finding a soft, quality kids’ garment may take a little more effort, but it’s worth it!
And if you take the time to select something different from others, you can get a guarantee your child will wear it until it falls off.
Need: This allows us to give our child something they need that may relate to a new life stage (starting school or kindergarten, for example) without a big deal, for example, sunglasses, a new lunchbox, or something for their room.
Read One of my favorites. This allows us to select books and titles that speak to their reading level and interests. What about something inspirational, classic literature, a cookbook, or something interesting?
Reason to follow Four gift Rule
Want, Wear, Need, Read has meant clearer expectations, less chaos, and less disappointment for our family. And even with fewer gifts, both children are excited because they are not over-stimulated with toys everywhere. They can learn, focus, engage, and enjoy.
The 5 Gift Rule
In the 5 Gift Rule, the first 4 gift rules are the same, something they want, something they need, something to wear and read. But the 5th gift rule? The 5th is the real decider or winner. It’s the thing they need or want but doesn’t know it.
This gift rule allows us to listen to our children, watch them live, and understand their passions. Instead of buying the season’s hot toy, we try to know what makes them genuinely excited. We give them something they’ll use and enjoy. And this is the Christmas gift that is from us to a child.
Reason to follow the 5-gift rule
You need to listen, and listening to your kids means connecting with them, a gift you cannot put a price on.Plus, you will feel the true joy of Christmas again by coming up with this Christmas gift, wrapping it, feeling the anticipation, and seeing their faces as they open it.
Try these two rules. You’ll love and get help from these rules.
Parameters That Help You to Decide Your Child’s Dream Gift
Fun factor
This may go without saying, but a Christmas gift that centers on just plain fun will almost always be a hit. Children of all ages tend to attract to toys that are silly, kooky, cool, and famous and make them happy. Gift items that move, light up, make noises, sparkle, are unusual, or wow are big winners, too. You can go right if you buy a gift that relates to your child’s interests and what your child thinks is fun and silly.
Age-Specific Gifts
For most Christmas ideas, the age range on a specific toy is there for a reason. It is often because kids younger than the intended age may need help using the toy, as it’s too challenging and unsafe for them. So, it’s usually best to stick to gifts geared to the recipient’s age. Also, tweens and teenagers will likely be excited if their gift is related to their age and interest.
Longevity of Christmas gift
While selecting the latest splashy or fad but poorly made gift may get a great reception when it’s opened; these gifts often need to be revised. Better gifts can capture attention for an extended time and are made well enough to last. So, must read reviews on durability before selecting. Also, consider what a kid might do with a gift. Select those gifts that offer long-lasting fun or different ways to use them, such as toys or games with numerous qualities that keep the playing going.
