The By Vilain Wax Zero Review
If you have been following the hair styling products community since 2009, By Vilain should be a brand that you will be very familiar with. Started by twin brothers Emil and Rasmus in 2012, this product brand was an outcome after 3 years of having their own Youtube Channel called Slikhaar TV, specializing in men’s hair tutorials. They even own a Salon calleld the Slikhaar Studio, which serve as the primary location for all Slikhaar TV episodes, and giving quality haircut.
In terms of hair product, they stated all the way back from the By Vilain Gold Digger in 2013, then the By Vilain Silver Fox. I have tried these products and to be honest, the By Vilain Silver Fox was one of the strongest hold product. However, it has a lot of grip and hard to wash.
Today, with the awareness grew more among the consumer on the ingredients used in each hair product, they have came out with their organic range – the Sidekick Zero and Wax Zero.
In this review, we will mainly focus on the By Vilain Wax Zero, but at the end of the of it, we will also share how the it works so well with the By Vilain Sidekick Zero. Let’s get into it!

Design and Packaging
The packaging is similar to the previous line – housed in a black plastic jar with white and silver glossy fonts imprinted on it. Since both Emil and Rasmus are from Salon background, you could see that his packaging has some similarity to any salon product you can find on the shelf. It is usually more glowy (in a good way), rather than your traditional barbershops ones. On it, you will able to find a comprehensive information from ingredients used to direction to use. One great thing about it is they come in smaller volumes (65ml). Hence this is one of flight friendly hair products for you to carry on.
Scent
They did not include any perfume. Hence, you will get a typical wax scent (a little sourish). I am a big fan of having a good scent. Hence, in this aspect, this is not really my favourite. The wax scent is actually quite strong and I can smell it throughout the day. Personally, the scent is not pleasant.

Texture & Application
Compared to the By Vilain Silver Fox, the Wax Zero texture is much more smooth and creamy. I would say it’s in between Kevin’s Murphy Knight Rider and the Orient’s Texture Paste. Still, tt can be easily scooped our from the jar and apply on the hair.
In this test, I have blow dry my hair before application. When apply the wax using fingers, it was very easy. However, it does get a bit of a grip after a while. Hence, I would advice you to get your style as soon as possible. You won’t need a lot of it to get a good shape. For me, 1 – 2 small coin size of it was sufficient.
Shine
Low Shine
Strength & Endurance
- Strong Hold. Holds well in humid climates. This is quite similar if not slightly stronger that the Analogue Paste by The Apothecary Malaysia. However, the By Vilain Silver Fox is still the strongest among all.
- Suitable for indoor and outdoor activities in humid climate.
- Endurance was quite good. Only a slight fade by the end of the day (after 12 hours).
- Can be restyled quite easily with a little grip
Washability
You would need a 1 -2 times of wash with Shampoo.

- Thickness – Fine to Thick Hair
- Volume – Low to High Volume Hair

Verdict
If you are looking a much stronger hold product that paste-type products, this is the right product to go. Of course, you would not mind the scent. To enhance volume and hold, I would advise to go together with the Sidekick Zero as the pre-styler. It was really effective in ensuring a better endurance, and with better hold. The sidekick Zero helps to prepare the hair to be less stubborn during styling and keeps them in shape. Overall, in comparison with Silver Fox, this is my better choice as it is easier to apply and does the job of holding my style throughout the day.
