Introduction to the BYRD Matte Pomade
After taking a short break from hair styling product, we are going back to some of the well known brands to see how their product has changed. Today we have the Byrd Matte Pomade. Formally at least on the packing, is known as the Dirty Byrd.
About the brand itself, the tale speaks of a surfer, named Wilson inspired by grandfather’s slick look and barbershop in North Dakota. He then began his quest to produce a modern day pomade that represent his lifestyle, with the inspiration of a 60’s surf culture. By testing with his members of Byrd surfing flock, the classic pomade was first produced, following by the rest.
We were glad to receive this sample for us to tried it out. Definitely a slight different look on the packaging, But we wondered how does the Matte Pomade different from your normal pomade or hair clay? Let’s dive into our review right away!

Design and Packaging
There is no a big change in design compared to their previous version. A black light weight tin with well printed yellow fonts, illustrating the brand to the description the product. It comes in either 3oz (89ml) or 1.5 oz (44.4ml). This means that it’s flight friendly, and very light to carry anywhere. What makes it so easy around is also it fits nicely to any pocket.
Scent
A mix of earthy and slight floral smell. It’s not very strong but noticeable during the day. It feels quite refreshing.
Texture & Application
For this test, I had my hair towel and blow dried before applying on it. On a side note, towel hair is also possible for this application.
I would say the experience of scooping out the pomade was very easy because of its smooth and soft texture. It is creamy white in colour with a creamy texture. It does feel a bit sticky but rubbing on the palm and applying on the hair was a breeze. I do not feel any tug or hardening after the application. Styling either with a comb or fingers are fine. For a short hair style of mine, I have used around 2 -3 pin size of the Byrd Matte Pomade. As mentioned on the packaging, it is a low sheen, no shine at all.
What makes the Byrd Matte Pomade stands out is because of it provides great texture especially if you already have a wavy hair. It helps to hold throughout the day with a natural layer-like look. So if you are not looking for something that is strong but rather a more natural look with proper hold, this is a product to go. Overall, the product feels light and natural.

Still looks pretty much holding in place considering the humidity.

Well defined on the side. Might require comb to style. Some great texture there ;)

Verdict
This is a product that is not made for strong hold. It is for those who are looking for a natural and slight messy look, with the ease of application. Compared to its first few version, I would say it has improved in terms of its texture as it is more smooth in texture and slightly better hold. So, if you are heading down for a surf or a breeze at the beach, take this with you and fly with it!
