With the trend of barbershops showing no sign of stopping especially in Singapore, I am so excited to have been invited by Telja Studios’s founder/Head Stylist, Chubbs for a haircut and have a chat about her experience of building Telja Studios from ground up.

Background
In the early days, Chubbs was working in an e-commerce startup but realized she could do more than that. She wanted to pursue a career in men’s grooming and able to bring much more positive impact in the community. Despite facing initial resistances, such as financial constraint and society perception about lady working as a barber, she decided to take the risk to leave her job and start practicing barbering in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia in 2015. Under the guidance of Lex Low from OTHRS Barbershop (previously known as Amplitude Barbershop), Chubbs went through a 6 months immersive hands-on apprenticeship. At that time, she was also exposed to how barbering able to bring social impact, by providing barbering skills to the less fortunate community.
After coming back from Malaysia, Chubbs then setup Telja Studios, with the word “Telja”- an Icelandic term, which means “to believe”. She used this word to signify the many people who had believed in her to embark on this journey. More importantly, it was believing her vision that through barbering, it will bring a positive impact to the individuals who walks in and eventually empower the community with barbering skills.

Entering a one-chair barbershop feels very comfortable. This concept was consistent with her mission to provide the best personalizing barbering service for men. This barbershop combines some elements of a traditional barbershop with modern haircut techniques.
I found Chubbs very knowledgeable. She would first consult with me on what style I wanted for my haircut. Then, we discussed on what are the challenges/frustration I faced with my hair styling routine. After a thorough scan through my head shape, hair growth direction and hair texture, Chubbs made a few recommendation based on the style I wanted. Since I faced cow-licks issues, and also the side of my hair growing outwards, I decided to go short and fade on the side, and a medium length on the top for me to combover.
Apart from being an expert in hair cuts, Chubbs also advised on the correct technique to style my hair through dry blowing, and also the art of choosing the right hair styling products to use. She’s a strong advocate of using pomades that uses beneficial ingredients such as Morris Motley’s Treatment Styling Balm that uses natural oils that keeps the scalp healthy, and Blind Barber’s 40 Proof Sea Salt Hair Spray. What’s even great that both products are suitable for the Singapore climate, providing great hold and yet easy to wash off!

It was a very satisfactory haircut and barbering service provided by Chubbs. I would say the experience was very consistent the moment I walked into the studio until stepping out from it. This barbershop strongly focuses on personalization, clean products and has a strong vision for the community.
