Teeth whitening products might, on the surface, seem like a strange topic to discuss.
But here on this blog, we’ve talked about the more subtle aspects of being well-groomed more than once. After taking care of your face and hair, it’s the little things that bring out your style.
And every man has one asset of style that is wholly unique to him – his smile!
I’m sure you take good care of your teeth, brushing twice daily and keeping up with regularly scheduled dental appointments. Maybe you even floss on a regular schedule.

But while nothing beats a dentist’s scaling treatment for keeping your teeth white and shiny, they can get pretty yellow by the time you next see your dentist. We know how it goes – that daily coffee is both delicious and necessary to get you through the day. Before you know it, though, that daily dose of caffeine has stained your teeth pretty bad.
That’s where teeth whitening treatments come in.
Teeth whitening treatments come in various forms. The simplest forms may not require any special product at all. For example, rinsing out your mouth after a cup of coffee or tea (or any other food or drink item that stains the teeth) might suffice to keep the worst of the staining out.
Still, if you struggle with keeping your teeth white or even preventing any further yellowing, you might want to try out one or more of the following products.

Whitening Toothpaste
The most straightforward teeth whitening product on this list is probably a variant of something you use daily – toothpaste! Often, these contain the basic fluoride mixture regular toothpaste does to keep your teeth and gums healthy. In addition to that, though, they have additional ingredients. We’ll cover the specifics in the individual product descriptions.
There’s no mystery in an application here. Brush twice daily with your chosen toothpaste like you usually would. With repeated use, you should see the difference in the whiteness of your teeth.
1. Crest Charcoal 3D White Toothpaste, Whitening Therapy Deep Clean with Fluoride, Invigorating Mint
The first teeth whitening product on our list is by the popular dental care brand Crest, making multiple appearances.
In addition to having fluoride like your basic toothpaste, it also contains charcoal, which is known for its absorbent properties. While some even resort to applying the charcoal powder directly to their mouth, this toothpaste accomplishes the same effect without that much mess. If you struggle with chronic staining of your teeth, you should be able to see results in a week or so with daily application.
Do read the instructions carefully before use, however. Be careful not to swallow any access as you don’t want all that absorbent charcoal in your digestive tract. This is particularly true if you are ingesting any medications – the charcoal might absorb it right up. Furthermore, the charcoal particles might be hard on the enamel of your teeth when brushing, particularly for those with sensitive teeth and gums.

2. Colgate Optic Renewal Teeth Whitening Toothpaste with Fluoride, 3% Hydrogen Peroxide, High Impact, White, Mint
It’s almost a no-brainer that Colgate would have a whitening toothpaste option – its brand is almost synonymous with toothpaste.
This toothpaste works because it contains a higher amount of hydrogen peroxide in its formula than regular toothpaste. Hydrogen peroxide is a chemical that has both bleaching and antiseptic properties. This makes this toothpaste effective at removing stubborn stains.
Furthermore, this toothpaste is easier on the enamel as it contains less abrasive material like charcoal. This makes it a better option for those with sensitive teeth and gums.
However, there are rare cases where people have allergic reactions to hydrogen peroxide. If you are one such person, you might experience swelling in your mouth when using this toothpaste. In which case, you should stop using the product immediately.

3. Davids Natural Toothpaste, Whitening, Antiplaque, Fluoride Free, SLS Free, Peppermint
Somewhat unique among teeth whitening products is this all-natural option by Davids. If you’re not a fan of chemicals like fluoride and hydrogen peroxide, you might want to pay attention to this one. Davids has sourced natural ingredients for its composition. This includes natural abrasives to help scrub your teeth free of stains.
Davids even provides a handy tool to help get the toothpaste out of the tube without physically squeezing out the last drop.
It also comes with spearmint flavor and even an option with charcoal added if that is something you’re interested in.
However, do note that the packaging may not be to everyone’s liking. The metal tube is susceptible to pressure. Combined with the more liquid nature of this toothpaste, you might end up squeezing out a lot more toothpaste than you need.

Whitening Pens
If you tend to get stains in stubborn, hard-to-reach places in your teeth, you might want to invest in some good whitening pens.
These whitening pens work because they excrete gel at the tip, which you apply to your teeth. After leaving the gel on your teeth for some time, you should start to see results. A good choice for those who like more control over their teeth-whitening process.
4. Colgate Optic White Overnight Teeth Whitening Pen
Colgate’s Overnight Teeth Whitening Pen contains a hydrogen peroxide solution that gives your teeth a transparent coat meant to be left on overnight. This coat is then brushed off in the morning, taking stains away with it.
The pen functions with a click mechanism that will secrete gel into the tip. When using a new pen, you might have to click up to 20 times for the gel to start flowing. While the packaging purports to contain 30 uses, you might find it running out faster based on the frequency of usage.
While this product can be effective, it takes time to work on tougher, more stubborn stains. Colgate recommends using it for up to 3 weeks for best results. And while the gel has no foul taste, some may find leaving a coat of gel on your teeth as you sleep a lightly uncomfortable prospect. Applying too much gel might also result in it clumping up when dry.

5. VieBeauti Teeth Whitening Pen
VieBeauti’s Teeth Whitening Pen comes in a charming and compact transparent casing. It boasts of an ‘ultrasafe’ gel formula coupled with a soft pen tip for gentle application.
Unlike Colgate’s offering, the VieBeauti Pen comes with a twist mechanism instead of a click one. This means that to secrete the gel to the tip, you twist the bottom of the pen. Similarly, you may have to do more twisting on the first use.
This pen is meant to be used twice a day, after brushing and flossing (you do floss, don’t you?). Each pen has about 20 uses, and each pack contains two pens.
Note that you must wait 30 minutes after application before consuming any food and drink—a minor inconvenience.
While it may take a while to apply to each tooth, these pens are an effective and safe option for whitening teeth.

Whitening Strips
Whitening strips are probably the most well-known of all teeth whitening products. They consist of two clear strips, which each adheres to one-half of your teeth. After leaving them there for a set period of time (usually 30 minutes to an hour), they can be removed, leading to a continuous whitening effect.
Teeth-whitening strips are perhaps the strongest of the teeth whitening products we’ve covered so far. If you’ve had yellow teeth for years, these might be the best option to clear those tough stains out. However, using these strips too frequently may damage the enamel of your teeth. In most cases, following the instructions provided should suffice for safe use. However, if you see your teeth turning semi-transparent, consult a dentist immediately.
6. Crest 3D White Professional Effects Whitestrips
The Crest Whitening Strips are the most well-known brand associated with the product. They are meant to be used for 30 minutes at a time. It also boasts of advanced seal technology to better mold your teeth.
One pack of Whitestrips contains 20 treatments and is meant to be used once a day. Also included are 2 ‘Express’ whitening treatments. While they take twice as long to apply as the regular strips, they have a much more noticeable whitening effect. This makes these Express treatments worthwhile when you need to look your best on short notice.
Be sure to follow the directions provided by the package when using Crest Whitestrips. For added protection, you might want to pair it with a good toothpaste for sensitive teeth to keep your enamel strong.

7. MySmile Teeth Whitening Strips
Apart from the somewhat hilarious fact that ‘teeth’ is misspelled on some of their packagings, MySmile strips are a good cheaper alternative to Crest strips. Coming in a pack of 14 sets, these strips hold just as well as Crest’s offerings.
MySmile strips are also used for 30 minutes once per day. It’s common to experience whiter teeth with just one usage.
Best of all, MySmile uses a carbamide peroxide formula which is both effective and easier on the teeth. This makes MySmile a better option for those with sensitive teeth or otherwise weaker tooth enamel.

8. Lumineux Oral Essentials Teeth Whitening Strips
To round out our selection of teeth whitening products, we have Oral Essentials Teeth Whitening Strips by Lumineux.
Lumineux claims to be ‘the first-ever dentist-formulated, naturally-derived, clinically-tested, certified non-toxic oral care company in the world.’ Can they substantiate this bold claim?
True to their claims, the Oral Essentials Whitening Strips contain no harsh chemicals. You won’t find hydrogen peroxide here. Or any other form of peroxide either, for that matter. Instead, the formula in these strips is a blend of natural oils and other organic ingredients.
Being made from natural ingredients does not simply mean that you use them on sensitive teeth. It means you can use them whenever you like. Need a freshen-up after that cup of black coffee or red wine? Slap these on.
A downside to this, though, is that these Oral Essentials strips are quite pricey. The price of organic materials, one supposes. Some might also find them less effective than other brands, but as with many things when it comes to teeth whitening products, your mileage may vary.

Final Thoughts
Teeth whitening products come in many shapes and forms. Whether it is simply making alterations to your usual routine with whitening toothpaste, using a whitening pen for precise application, or using whitening strips, one is spoilt for choice. Depending on your dental health, the right choice of product varies from person to person.
Still, some forms of yellowing can only be treated by a dentist. These usually take some form of internal staining. In-clinic dental treatments can be pricey, but a consultation with your dentist will probably be most helpful in evaluating your options. As for at-home treatments, as we covered earlier, be sure to follow the instructions as provided and use them accordingly.
The average happy adult smiles 40-50 times per day. That’s a lot of times to flash your teeth at others. It’s worth investing a little bit towards maintaining a pleasant smile.
Got your teeth in good order already? Be sure to pay attention to other oft-overlooked aspects of grooming, such as giving yourself a manly smell with cologne.
